Command Combat WILL be finished

As anyone who has followed Command Combat: Civil War will know, I am WAY behind on releasing elements to the game.  First the 1864 expansion was supposed to come out during its 150th anniversary; that would be last year.  I also intended on having the battle pack for that year, The Wilderness, come out during its anniversary.  Then the 1865 compilation of all the expansions was supposed to come out on the anniversary of Lee’s surrender to Grant.

None of these things have happened… yet.  The main reason for this is because I’m wanting 1864 to have campaign rules in it, but I want those rules to have an option to find the results of battles and skirmishes without having to play them out.  That is supposed to be the intention of the game, to tie miniature battles together, but I want people to be able to skip the small and unimportant ones.  This means creating almost an entirely new game.

When you mix this with what was already happening in my professional life, it meant the game had to take a major backseat.  What was happening was that I was discovering how little money is made in miniature gaming, especially when it’s a niche market like the Civil War.  It’s not like I’m trying to be greedy or anything, but I’m trying to build a business, and what I was making from 1861, ’62, and ’63 wasn’t even enough to buy food let alone pay rent; and the amount of time put into them took away from endeavors that do.  And so I had to become realistic fast.

This didn’t mean I gave up on the project, it just meant I had to put it on the backburner and work on it while I had time.  I’m now ashamed at how much time that has taken, especially since some fans have held on for so long.  So I’m making certain it will come out soon.  So here is the schedule of release:

1864 expansion – November, 2015
1865 compilation – Second quarter, 2016
Battle of the Wilderness battle pack – Third quarter, 2016

I will be trying to get a navy game out as well, and perhaps another battle pack, but no more promises from now on.

Civil War Buildings

Even though I play Command Combat: Civil War in 15 mm, I've often been using 10 mm buildings by the company Buildings in Turmoil.  The reason is two-fold.  First, 15 mm buildings are sometimes too large.  Even though they're supposed to be appropriately scaled to 15 mm figures, the fact is that each figure isn't supposed to be representing 1 person; it represents dozens or even hundreds, so it's actually more appropriate to go one scale down for the buildings.

I met John from Buildings in Turmoil at Historicon, and he let me sell my rules at his table.  I was putting on Gettysburg that day, and was short an important house, the Bryan house, which was essentially the goal of Pickett's charge.  His buildings are all based on real buildings from the battle fields, (he lives at Gettysburg,) so I asked him to paint one up, and his son Jeff had it to me the next morning.  They're a great group of sculptors and painters, and I highly recommend them.

1863 and Gettysburg to Premier at Historicon

Next week we will be premiering the 1863 expansion at Historicon, and playing the Battle of Gettysburg.  This event will show off some of the new rules in the expansion, as well as the elements of the recently released Gettysburg battlepack.

This will be my first trip to Historicon, so it should be very exciting.  The convention is held in Fredericksburg, Virginia, which is the sight of two major battles of the Civil War.  I will try to take a tour of the battlefield at some point, but may be gaming too much to have a chance.

If you will be at Historicon, please come visit and join us for our game.

Battle of Gettysburg Battlepack Released

The long-awaited Battle of Gettysburg Battlepack has just been released.  In this battlepack, players choose one of the three days of the battle, and duke it out using the generals and units of those times.  The player can then put the maps from all three days together to play the entire battle using special army rules and stats for Lee and Meade.

The Battle of Gettysburg Battlepack is available on Wargame Vault:

Battle of Fredericksburg fixed

The scenario for the Battle of Fredericksburg went out with a rather large error at the beginning.  I had used an earlier battle pack as the template, and I forgot to take out an early paragraph.  It's been fixed now and is back up on the website for free downloading.

Sorry about the mistake everyone!

Command Combat at Origins

Command Combat: Civil War is on display along with other award nominees at the Origins Game Fair this weekend.  If you, or anyone you know, is going to the fair, be sure to take a look at the game.  It should be in the room Origins has reserved for their nominated games.  After taking a look, be sure to vote for it, as it appears to be decided by the public.

Command Combat: Civil War Nominated for Best Historic Miniatures Game

Command Combat: Civil War has been nominated for best historical miniatures game by the Origins Awards!  This is actually fairly old news, as it was nominated at GAMA in Las Vegas, Nevada.  However, this weekend is the weekend when the fate will be decided, whether it will win the coveted award or not.  It's being looked at and scrutinized at the Origins Game Fair along with the other nominees.

To be completely honest, I don't expect to win.  Despite the huge pride I have in the game, and the fact that I think it's the best system for the Civil War, the others that are nominated are by major companies with many employees, writers, artists, historians, etc.  One of them is one of my all time favorites, Flames of War: Casino.  This is an absolutely amazing miniatures expansion.  The others are games I've been very impressed by as well.

So to be nominated alongside these wonderful games is a huge honor.  This may sound like BS, but to me, I've already won just after being nominated.

Here's the link to the nominations:

The Battle of Bull Run / Manassas at Game Empire (Originally posted July 21, 2011)

Command Combat: Civil War will have its release party at Game Empire in Pasadena.  We will be playing the Battle of Bull Run / Manassas to commemorate the 150th anniversary of that battle which launched the American Civil War.  Play as the cautious McDowell, the stern "Stonewall" Jackson, the flamboyant JEB Stuart, one of the Union divisional generals, such as Tyler or Hunter, or one of the Confederate division generals, such as Johnston or Beauregard.  The game reflects the personalities of these generals.

The address for Game Empire is:

2302 E. Colorado Blvd.
Pasadena, CA 91107

The player who gets the most points will win a free copy of the game.
